Dhanteras is on Friday, 6 November 2026. In the four weeks before it, our counter at Rashbehari Avenue gets the same set of questions: is the offer on coins or only on jewellery, how much will this necklace actually cost, and is it worth waiting for the sixth.
This guide answers those questions without the sales language. It explains what the Dhanteras offer covers, what it does not, and how to compare two pieces without getting lost in percentages.
What Dhanteras means in a Kolkata household
Dhanteras is the first day of the Diwali festivities. Families clean the house, light diyas in the evening and perform Lakshmi and Kuber puja. Buying a piece of metal on the day is an old custom, and for most households that means gold or silver.
In Kolkata, the festival sits close to Kali Puja, so the shopping is often combined. Some families buy a small piece every year, others wait for a wedding or a milestone. Both are normal. The size of the purchase matters less than the fact that it is bought on the day.
The 2026 offer, in plain terms
The Dhanteras offer runs from 26 October to 8 November 2026. Here is what it includes:
- Gold making charges: up to 30% off on eligible 22K and 18K gold jewellery. The discount is on the making charge, not on the gold rate.
- Diamond MRP pieces: up to 10% off MRP on 18K diamond jewellery. Diamond nosepins and 14K MRP pieces are 5% off MRP.
- Gifts: an assured gift on purchases above ₹35,000, in store.
A few things are in store only. Flat 50% off making on a selected range of RJ diamond jewellery, 25% off making on the rest of the 14K range, and 10% off gem stones except loose diamonds. Silver and costume jewellery also have counter offers this season. Ask at the showroom for the exact piece.

Coins are not part of the making-charge discount
This is the part most people miss. Gold coins and bars carry a fixed making charge, so they stay outside the making-charge offer. If a shop tells you it is giving 30% off making on a coin, check the base price carefully. The discount has to come from somewhere.
That does not make coins a bad buy. A 1 g or 2 g BIS-hallmarked 22K coin is still the simplest Dhanteras gift, and a 5 g or 10 g coin is a straightforward way to add to gold savings. You are paying the day’s rate plus a fixed charge, with no design premium. Just do not expect the Dhanteras making-charge discount on top.
If you want the discount, buy jewellery. If you want a lower premium over the gold rate, buy a coin. Decide which one you are doing before you walk in.
How a gold price is actually built
Every piece on our site is priced from four parts:
- Gold value: the day’s rate per gram multiplied by the net gold weight.
- Making charge: the jeweller’s charge for the design and labour.
- Hallmarking and other charges: the statutory and per-piece costs.
- GST: added on the total.
Stones and diamonds are priced separately. On a diamond piece, the gold value is usually smaller than the stone value, which is why a percentage-off-MRP offer behaves differently from a making-charge offer.
The useful habit is to ask for the breakup on paper or on screen before you decide. A piece with a high making charge and a 30% discount can still cost more than a simpler piece with a lower making charge and a smaller discount. Compare the final payable amount, not the discount headline.
22K, 18K and 14K: which one for what
22K is 91.6% gold. It is the traditional choice for plain necklaces, bangles, chains and Pola, and it is what most Bengali families mean when they say gold jewellery. It is softer, so it suits solid designs more than delicate stone settings.
18K is 75% gold. The added alloy makes it harder, which is why diamond and stone-set pieces are usually made in 18K. It still holds value well and is comfortable for regular wear.
14K is 58.5% gold. It is used for lighter, lower-priced MRP pieces, often for younger buyers or everyday studs. It costs less, but it is also further from pure gold if you plan to exchange it later.
Our gold is BIS-hallmarked. Diamonds come with IGI, GIA or SGL certification. If you are buying a diamond piece, ask to see the certificate and check that the number on the stone matches the number on the card.
What to check before you pay
Six questions cover most of it:
- What is the net gold weight, excluding stones?
- What is the making charge, and is the discount already applied to it?
- Is the piece BIS-hallmarked, and is the diamond certified?
- What is the total, including GST?
- What is the return window, and what is the exchange rate on old gold?
- If it is a gift, will it be delivered before 6 November?
We offer a 7-day return window and lifetime exchange at the full gold rate. Those two terms matter more than a one-day discount, because you live with the piece long after Dhanteras.
Timing, puja and delivery
Dhanteras puja is performed in the evening Pradosh kaal. Check your family panchang for the muhurat, as timings vary by city and household. Our showroom is open 11 am to 8 pm that day, so you can come before or after the puja.
If you are ordering online, do not leave it to the last evening. Kolkata delivery takes 1–3 business days by our own staff. The rest of India takes 5–7 business days by insured courier. For delivery before Dhanteras, order by 3 November within Kolkata and by the end of October outside it.
If you are buying from outside Kolkata and want the piece to reach family here, order early and send us the delivery address on WhatsApp. We will confirm the date before you pay.
A short buying checklist
Set a budget first, then choose the person and the occasion. Pick the purity that suits the design, not the other way around. Ask for the price breakup. Check the hallmark and the diamond certificate. Confirm the return and exchange terms. If delivery matters, confirm the date in writing.
That is a slower five minutes at the counter, and it usually saves a return trip later.
